BODY IMAGE, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SELF-ESTEEM AND SELF EFFICACY AS PREDICTORS OF GYM ATTENDANCE IN IBADAN METROPOLIS

The study was conducted to investigate body image, physical activities selfesteem and self-efficacy as predicators of gym attendance in Ibadan Metropolis. The study was carried out using descriptive survey research designs of correction type. The population for this study was male and female that attends gym in the study area. Three hundred (300) were sampled as respondents using purposive sampling technique. Data were collected with the use of both self-developed and standardized questionnaire with a reliability of 0.089 Cronbach’s alpha scale. The data collected was analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics.
The study showed that body image satisfaction has approximately (21%) unique contribution to gym attendance, physical activity self-esteem satisfaction has approximately (7%) unique contribution to gym attendance. The result of Regression analysis conducted to ascertain the contribution of self-efficacy to gym attendance shows approximately (7%) unique contribution to gym attendance.
The result revealed that the independent variables only contribute 8% to the dependent variable. This implies that the composite contribution of body image, physical activity self-esteem satisfaction and self-efficacy will statistically have impact on gym attendance. Overall this study showed that the reasons why most people attended the gym regularly is to improve their body image positively.
